Youth Empowerment Programme

Singapore

In this podcast we explore with three mentors and three of the youth participating in a youth empowerment programme in Singapore fundamental concepts that underlie a two-fold integrated youth empowerment programme consisting of sport and spiritual empowerment in which they are engaged in.

While most youth empowerment courses seek to build technical training and capacity of youth to engage in decision-making and participate in a process of change, this programme seeks to go further and empower young people as protagonists of transformation, in which their capacity is developed in the field of action and service — where can be innovators of new community dynamics and systems, and contribute moral leadership in the advancement of society.

Many may recall that in 1996, UNESCO released the inspirational Delors report Learning: The Treasure Within. It presented a vision of education based on four pillars of learning: learning to live together, learning to know, learning to do and learning to be. The report emphasized that simply developing skills for work was insufficient and that the survival of humanity is highly dependent on learning how to live together.

This podcast is an opportunity to hear valuable insights from those involved in this initiative which will help inform public discourse on youth empowerment, particularly as it relates to the development of policy and transforming education.
