A culture of peace is anchored in the recognition and acceptance of the oneness of humanity. The concept of a culture of peace emerged from the International Congress on Peace in the Minds of Men, organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Côte d'Ivoire in July 1989. In today’s interconnected world, culture's power to transform societies is clear.
Promoting a culture of peace requires us to systematically explore and expand our understanding of peace, to identify factors that build peaceful and resilient societies and mainstream the implications of the oneness of humanity in policies, structures, and institutions. These include incorporating a common set of values universally upheld and universally implemented in order to safeguard people and preserve the balance of nature on the planet. When Individuals and communities transform their thoughts and actions towards peace, they become the engine that drives the movement for peace and prosperity towards its unfoldment locally, regionally and globally.
